Ultrasound is a deep heating modality that increases circulation and helps distribute inflammation. This treatment is helpful for acute and chronic injuries. It is used for conditions such as bursitis, tendonitis, myositis, sprains/strains, with disc bulges or herniations and for chronic spasms.
Electric Muscle Stimulation:
EMS is a non heat producing modality that utilizes electric current with various waveforms to either reduce pain or muscular spasms. Its works to reduce pain by stimulating neurotransmitter release at the neuromuscular junction until the neurotransmitter cannot replenish itself and the transmission of pain is stopped. This setting is typically used for acute conditions. EMS can also be used to reduce muscle spasms by "wearing down" the contractile component of muscle with higher intensity, thereby reducing the spasm.
Traction performed to the neck, or cervical spine causes the joints to separate and stimulates production of synovial fluid which lubricates the joint and improves range of motion. It also helps distribute and reduce any inflammatory products from settling onto the joint cartilage which irritates the local tissues and causes an increased pain sensation.
Traction performed to the low back or lumbar spine separates the facet joints, causes a vacuum and increases lubrication of the joints surface and improves range of motion. In addition to helping the body to move and reabsorb inflammatory products, at higher levels, Lumbar Traction decompresses the disc and encourages the outer disrupted fibers of the disc the annulus fibrosis, to tighten and heal.
